E Kaabọ o!
Kaabọ means welcome in Yoruba, my native language.
So, hello! welcome to my mind dump.
It’s my birthday!!!! And without fail, the weeks before my birthday always feel so dragged out and miserable. Don’t get me wrong, miserable is a harsh word to use. But that’s how it feels when my born day is approaching, and everything is transitioning due to the weather. Summer into Fall when the sun sets earlier, the mood is more dull outside and our fav - seasonal depression creeps in. To some extent, people go through different versions and levels of this. Nonetheless, it happens to almost all of us.
I see my birthday as the first day of the new year. Which makes me place all types of unneeded pressure on myself to achieve certain feats by that day. I won’t lie, not hitting those goals always feel like a massive blow to my progress. And honestly, my self esteem. The saying “time waits for no one” hits so much deeper these days. Why are we so convinced that we’re running out of time that we forget to live in the present?
Regardless, don’t forget that we are here and able. The future is a direct result of what we do now, so grab today by the balls and stay present.
On a lighter note.
Let’s talk about things i used to hate as a kid but I love now:
HOT sauce… I was really team ketchup for a hot minute, sue me!
Mangos… before y’all arrest me, “slimy” fruit just creeped me out as a kid.
Cucumbers… If you don’t understand, I’m happy with not explaining.
Pickles… I LIKE, not love.
Fish, Shellfish a.k.a the protein of the sea… which is quite self explanatory but I’ll give y’all insight
I wouldn’t say I eat them all. Baby steps, please. I do love me some Calamari though! My mom cooked fish a lot when I was younger. To be candid, How Nigerians incorporate fish into dishes wasn’t my favourite. I would always TRY to avoid eating dinner when fish was on the menu. Ay! this is not to take away from my moms cooking, she can throw down in the kitchen.
Quick confession… I disliked fish so much I would chew it at the dinner table then slip out for a second to throw it up in my bathroom. I don’t remember ever getting caught, but maybe a few suspicious glares here and there.
I can assure you I hated the rest of those things simply because I had never tried them. I always imagined they were gross so I stuck to that. Which is extremely funny to me. Why are mangoes my All Time Favourite fruit now? What a major turn of events, but that’s really how life is. We write things off before we explore them. Only to realise down the line that whatever we’re avoiding could’ve been something good for us in the first place. However, I’ve come to realise that you can gain a greater appreciation for things that you once disregarded. Find the beauty in the madness.
Back to you, what’s something you hated as a kid…
Your 20s are for the liquor, your 30s are like wine.
Year 22 was an interesting one for sure; A year of some serious self discovery and a LOT of growth. I no longer put the effort into relationships that don’t serve me, I made choices that put me first, I explored and tried things I had never before. Now more than ever, I can say for a fact I know who I am, or at least who I aspire to be. I know my what and my why. My what is my purpose and my why explains my purpose. Oh baby! I found my voice.
It feels good to be turning 23. I’ll admit I have my bad days, but when I experience the good ones they compensate for so much. I have faith in what life is going to bring my way. A year of youth and greatness. All glory to God.
The biggest lessons I’ve learnt this year?
Be unapologetically you. Choose you. Stay active. Have integrity. Always take the initiative. Step out of your comfort zone. Love unconditionally. Eat good, always (duh!).
Take 3 seconds to be vulnerable.
Here’s to year 23. To forming new relationships, maybe fixing broken ones and cherishing old ones. To new money, more success, peace of mind, and more FOOD.
If you made it this far and haven’t subscribed already, I'm side-eyeing you sha. Just kidding but seriously you’ll love it here, so join the fam.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts, O dabọ!
